The Skill of Deep Reading Versus Scanning

"Like a marathon runner who can’t bench-press three hundred pounds, or a person who can bench-press three hundred pounds but can’t run a marathon, we seem to cultivate either the skill of deep reading or the skill of scanning. It’s possible to do both, but it is difficult to maintain both abilities."

Google’s then CEO Eric Schmidt ”I worry that the level of interrupt, the sort of overwhelming rapidity of information—and especially of stressful information—is in fact affecting cognition. It is in fact affecting deeper thinking. I still believe that sitting down and reading a book is the best way to really learn something. And I worry that we’re losing that.”
